February 17, 2010 ADHA Announces Changes to ADHA/Sigma Phi Alpha Journalism Award Program Student authors don’t miss the deadline for this year’s ADHA/Sigma Phi Alpha Journalism Awards! We have some exciting news to add to the award competition. This year we will have a new second award category. For the first time, this year’s program, sponsored by a grant from Johnson and Johnson Healthcare Products, will present awards to the outstanding manuscript submitted by a baccalaureate or degree completion candidate and a second award at the master or doctoral level. This change will allow a more level playing field for bachelors and masters/doctoral authors. Both winning manuscripts will be published in the Journal of Dental Hygiene (JDH)(after revisions if necessary). Runner up articles will have abstracts also published in JDH and Access. In addition, each of the primary authors of the winning manuscripts will receive a $1,000 award each, along with a plaque recognizing their achievement. To be Eligible, the author must be:

Manuscripts must be submitted electronically and received at ADHA Headquarters by March 31, 2010 to be eligible for the competition. The recipient of the ADHA-Sigma Phi Alpha Journalism Award will be notified by letter in May of 2010. The ADHA Sigma Phi Alpha Journalism Awards will be recognized at 2010 Annual Session in Las Vegas. (Please note that funding for travel is not available through ADHA and is at the responsibility of the winner if he/she wishes to attend.) Reminder of Ban of Flavored Tobacco Products This is a friendly reminder to include tobacco education for children and teens during Children’s Dental Health Month! Tobacco companies are craftier than ever in their marketing and display of colorful candy, fruit, and flavored products to make them more appealing to new users. Frequently these products are placed near candy displays in retail outlets, especially gas stations and can be mistaken for candy by youth. These new products may appeal to children and teens because they are easy to conceal and carry the names of youth-popular cigarette brands. In addition, more traditional smokeless tobacco products continue to be marketed in a wide variety of kid-friendly candy and fruit flavors. On September 22, 2009 guidance issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) went into effect which makes flavored tobacco products illegal. In spite of that guidance, there are still websites and retail outlets where the products remain available. The FDA has posted a reporting form on its website that can be used to report the continued sales of these illegal products. The form can be found at www.fda.gov/flavoredtobacco. The Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL) is Now Accepting Registrations The Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL) is now accepting registrations for two phases of its popular Institute for Allied Health Educators (IAHE) online program to be held in 2010. The IAHE is a professional, online development program designed to prepare faculty in allied health professions education for successful academic careers. Over the past three years, with the assistance of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry, 97 allied health educators have participated in the IAHE. The 2009 class on Teaching Foundations was the first to experience the Institute entirely online, with four synchronous sessions and three self-study modules. The new approach gave participants maximum flexibility and convenience and garnered very positive evaluations, including the following: A very approachable form of distance learning. Very knowledgeable faculty. Excellent program for new as well as experienced educators. Has allowed me to better assess and further develop my teaching skills. An OUTSTANDING course. Extremely well-organized with expert instructors, relevant and applicable material and engaging open forums which allow you to provide and hear useful feedback. To give even more allied dental educators the chance to experience this program, the Teaching Foundations sessions will be provided again in January 2010, and the all-new Advances in Educational Methods for Allied Health Educators will be offered in June 2010. Educators enrolled in the IAHE, whether new to academia or seasoned faculty in need of a mid-career boost, will gain experience with key classroom and clinical teaching practices. Phase two will be open for registration until May 31, 2010. Each session will be archived, so if registrants miss a session, they can view a podcast that features all of the slides, video and audio. They also can correspond with the instructors between sessions to clarify any lessons they wish. The 2009 class reported great satisfaction with these features. Dental Hygienists Hold the Key To Children’s Oral Healthcare! During National Children’s Dental Health Month, America’s Toothfairy® celebrates the valuable impact that dental hygienists have on our children’s oral health each and every month of the year! In February 2009, Janice Siegel, a registered dental hygienist and oral health educator with the Collier County Health Department in Naples, Florida, honored this important month by presenting oral health education to approximately 1,000 Collier County elementary school children. Collier County Health Department joined the America’s Toothfairy Affiliate network in 2008, receiving critical support for its oral health community outreach effort, The Tooth Fairy Program. Using the Toothfairy Island oral health curriculum provided to all America’s Toothfairy Affiliates, Ms. Siegel transforms into a real-life Toothfairy, delivering positive oral health messages to Collier County families through engaging, age-appropriate activities. Ms. Siegel revels in her role and the reaction she receives from classrooms of children, explaining, “when the topics I cover are reiterated on the [Toothfairy Island film] in a child-friendly manner, the lessons are stronger and more easily become part of the children’s lives. As I am dressed as the Tooth Fairy myself, the question posed by Bubbles at the end of the film results in a room of fingers pointed in my direction.
